Corm tunic unique in being composed of finely-plaited fibres. Leaves five to eight grey green and narrow up to 1mm wide. Flowers 5-9cm high, white with yellow throat and brownish base to the segments and sometimes a thin purple stripe outside, much enhanced by the finely-divided vermilion style. Turkey, Rhodes, Chios, on rocky slopes or in light woodland. Its small size prevents it from being very exciting as a garden plant but it is easy to grow and will often self-sow.
