Corm tunic parallel fibres. Leaves up to 1cm wide, dark green with an indistinct central stripe, appearing long after the flowers. Flowers 10-13cm high, pale to deep lilac and unique in having very short inner perianth segments (giving a superficial resemblance to Iris unguicularis) the styles much branched and lilac or white, autumn. Albino forms are known. Romania, Yugoslavia, Ukraine, in meadows and deciduous woodland. Cultivation is easy in sun or light shade in situations which do not dry out, ideally humus rich.
