Tufted perennial from a thick rootstock, 20-30cm in height, the leafy stems ascending to erect. Leaves oval to lanceolate 3-5cm long, irregularly toothed and crimped, thickly, almost velvety, greenish-yellow-hairy, long-stalked. Flowers solitary, axillary, long-pedicelled, of good size, purple, rarely white, summer in the wild. Chile, from the Andes of Atacama to Coquimbo at 2500-3500m.
