Tuber globular, corky, deeply buried. Stems spreading underground, emerging some way from the tuber, 7-10cm long. Leaves grey-green, variable in different populations and the basis for subspeciation, basically pinnate or ternate. Flowers pink, purple or maroon, up to seven in head-like clusters. Turkey, Lebanon, Cyprus, Crete, on stony mountain slopes. C.r. subsp. erdelii has biternate leaves and flowers 1.5-1.8cm long, Turkey and Lebanon. Subsp. kurdica has tri to quadriternate leaves, and flowers 1.5-1.8cm long, Turkey only. Subsp. uniflora is a somewhat smaller version with more or less solitary flowers, Crete only. Group 2 or sandframe, with a warm summer rest not too dry, but not easy to manage.
