Botanical Description

Clump forming with mainly stiff and erect stems which may reach 90cm in height. Leaves yellow-green, lanceolate or spathulate, often sharply toothed near their tips, the lower ones stalked to 5cm long, the upper ones somewhat smaller and sessile. Flowerheads about 2cm across in panicles at the tips of the stems, with violet or purple ray florets, June onwards, as late as December in its more southerly latitudes. Sandy plains, lowland grassy or scrubby slopes and, in the Sierra Nevada, in forest clearings.
