Tufted to clump-forming from shortly creeping, densely dark brown-hairy rhizomes. Leaves all basal, few, solitary, 10-30cm long, elliptic to ovate, shortly pointed, irregularly toothed and lustrous. Flowering stems 10-30cm long. Flowers bowl-shaped, 1.5cm across. lilac-purple, or rarely white, in cymose clusters of ten to forty, late summer. Moist cliffs, often in deep shade. C.r. forma pilosum has pilose scapes, cymes and calyces and sometimes also downy on the leaf veins beneath.
