This is a vigorous twiner that may scramble to l-2 m over a suitable support. Leaves variable in shape from linear to ovate, entire but often undulate or slightly sinuous on the margin, short-stalked. Flowers 5-7cm wide stars of a most beautiful lavender-blue. One robust form has broad leaves and a zone of purple at the base of the corolla lobes, and is sometimes distinguished as var. forrestii. There is also a var. alba with pure white flowers. China, Sichuan and Yunnan, in open places and woodland margins at 2000-4000m.
