Botanical Description

and similar to the better known C. virginica, but with broadly oblanceolate to spathulate or narrowly ovate leaves with distinct stalks, 2-10cm long. Flowering stems 10-30cm long, at first more or less erect. Flowers up to ten or more per stem, each one 2-3cm wide, white or pink with deeper veining, spring. Northeastern North America and mountains farther south (North Carolina and Tennessee), in open woods and thickets and open upland slopes.
