Stems 30-60cm in height, rather stoutly erect with a persistent basal rosette and lanceolate, acute cauline leaves. Flowers five to ten, pure white and soft yellow in the throat, up to 6cm wide with spathulate tipped petals and oblonglanceolate sepals, gracefully downcurving, having short, green callused tips. The lip is oblong to vaguely fiddle-shaped, 2-3 by 1-1.2cm with dark green parallel gills or ridges running lengthwise.
Chile, from Valparaiso to the southern lakes and volcanoes, in damp subalpine volcanic meadows, short downland and rocky slopes at 600-1000m. Flowering from November to January in the wild.
