Botanical Description

Stems robust, erect, 30-70cm tall with spikes of up to thirteen flowers. Leaves may die before flowering time. Flowers warm yellow, about 6cm across, the dorsal sepal and petals forming a hood for the strongly trilobed, channelled 2.2 by 1.5cm lip, the central lobe recurving out like a tongue and bearing a few undulating, interrupted ridges at the base which reduce to falcate papillae at the centre, all are green tipped, Chile, from Valparaiso to Valdivia in thin, sandy pasture, coastal hills, Andean foothills, sheltered clearings in savanna etc. at sea level to 1200m. Flowering from November to December in the wild.
