Normal height to about 40m, pyramidal when young, then columnar, the ultimate branches on specimens of 3m or more hanging vertically. Leaves 2-3mm long, deep green, somewhat rank-smelling. Male strobili yellow. Oregon to Alaska in high rainfall areas.
Dwarf and slow-growing cultivars: 'Compacta', dense rounded habit, eventually exceeding 2m in height, leaves bright green. 'Compacta Glauca', smaller and denser than 'Compacta' with blue-green foliage.
