to 10cm tall spreading by wiry, woody rhizomes which bear elongated rosettes like silvery-silky hairy columns. Leaves oblanceolate, 1.3-2.2cm long with a few apical teeth. Involucres nestle in the upper foliage to 3cm wide by 2-3cm deep with showy orange-yellow, red-backed ray florets and a projecting boss of disc florets. Central zones of Argentina and Chile southwards to Volcan Llaima in bare screes, particularly of volcanic cinders at 1700-3500m. An extremely beautiful species, but not easy in cultivation.
