Botanical Description

A tufted short-lived perennial or biennial, 20-30cm tall, sometimes more. Basal leaves rosetted, 3-10cm long, loosely white-felted to glabrate, bi- to tripinnatifid. Flowerheads white or pink tinted, 2cm or more in length. C.d. var. rubricaulis is more compact in habit, with the reddish stems branching at ground level to about halfway up (C. douglasii stems branch only in the upper half). California to Washington, Montana and Arizona, in scrub, gravelly slopes and plains and open pine forest, above 1300m. C.d. var. rubricaulis only in California, Nevada and Oregon. C.d. var. alpina A. Gray. This perennial forms tufts of dense rosettes which may be lightly greyish-felted or almost smooth. Leaves 2-6cm long, oblong to elliptic, divided into nine to twenty-five rounded, crenate or lobed leaflets. Flowerheads solitary, white, 1.5-3cm long, on glandular stems 2-5cm in height.
