Akin to C. montana, but generally taller usually represented in gardens by C.t. subsp. stricta (syn. C. stricta) or a plant under that name which is 15cm tall and has blue flowers of good size. True subsp. stricta should be at least 30cm tall with narrowly lanceolate, grey-white felted leaves. Subsp. pirinensis, syn. C. variegata, grows 10-20cm high, the lower leaves white woolly and broadly elliptical. Several other subspecies exist, all variations on a theme, but are rarely if ever cultivated. [Pl.101]
