much branched, densely white-felted, 30-80cm in height. Leaves crowded, linear, l-3cm long. Floral bracts redtipped, with a pair of lateral lobes. Flowers 2-2.5cm long with a prominent yellowish galea, the calyx red-tipped, late spring to late summer. California, in canyons and rocky slopes in chaparral or sagebrush scrub (Artemisia tridentata). C.I. subsp. grisea is grey-hairy with green to brownish-green floral bracts (coastal bluffs).
