Tufted to clump-forming, 30-60cm in height. Leaves about the same length, semi-erect to arching, bright yellow-green. Inflorescence of three to six, subglobose to broadly cylindrical spikes, the upper one male. Utricles fairly large (3-6mm long) light green or yellow, often maturing warm brown. Northern North America, in meadows and by lakes and rivers.
