Loosely tufted, 10-3 0cm or sometimes more in height. Leaves erect or arching, either shorter or longer than the stems. Inflorescence of four to six, 3-10mm long spikes, the upper one mainly male. Utricles coarsely ribbed and golden yellow. California to British Columbia, eastwards to the Atlantic, in mountain forest above 1150m.
