spreading by slender rhizomes, with rosettes of small, spathulate, toothed, dark green sublustrous leaves. Flowers solitary, 2cm wide or more, erect, bowl-shaped with wide spreading lobes creating an almost starry effect, deep blue with red anthers, on stems 2-5cm in height. Olympic mountains, Washington State, in granite rock crevices. Needs scree or crevice conditions, but sometimes fails to flower well; best in the alpine house. C.p. 'Sovereigniana' has white flowers.
