from a central rootstock forming a low diffuse hummock of slender, more or less prostrate to decumbent stems to 10cm or more in length. Leaves small, suborbicular to ovate or spathulate, often somewhat
glaucous and crenate. Flowers widely bowl-shaped, erect with long, broad, spreading lobes, deep purple with darker veining, 1.5cm in diameter. Northern Greece and Albania in mountain screes and rocks of schist and serpentine. A tricky plant to keep going well, often collapsing suddenly. Seems to dislike wet winters and is best in the alpine house. [Pl.89]
