Botanical Description

non Sims. Clump to colony-forming, spreading by rhizomes. Stems erect, 20-30cm in height, sometimes more. Leaves mostly basal, broadly lanceolate, crenate and somewhat hairy, 3-6cm long with stalks of equal or greater length. Flowers rich purple-blue, nodding, to 3cm long, one to several on each stem. Caucasus to Armenian Turkey, in meadows and rocky slopes above 1600m. A showy species but can be invasive and not suited to small rock gardens. Sometimes shy flowering, at least until thoroughly established.
