Botanical Description

Often solitary rosette-forming, with glossy lanceolate leaves. Stems 10cm or more in height bearing several 1.5-2cm long lilac to lavender-blue bells. Eastern Alps, Carpathians and mountains of Balkan peninsula, above 1250m. C.a. subsp. orbelica (syn. C. orbelica) has solitary flowers on shorter stems; Balkans only. Although stated to be a perennial, in cultivation C. alpina usually behaves as a biennial and should be considered as such. [Pl.84]
