Botanical Description

Leaves four to six, 20-60cm long, 5-25mm wide. Flowering stems 20-130cm tall with a loose 10-30cm raceme of creamy-white, blue or violet flowers 4-10cm across. Petals twist on fading. The cream-flowered plants occur in Oregon and are separated as subsp. leichtlinii. Blue and violet-flowered plants extend down the western seaboard of North America and are separated as subsp. suksdorfii. This is a variable species and several cultivars have been selected such as 'Alba', white-flowered; 'Atrocaerulea', deep blue; 'Semi Plena', semi-double cream; 'Atroviolacea', deep violet.
