Botanical Description

Mat to cushion-forming, 2.5-7cm tall with strong rhizomes. Leaves 6-10mm long, ovate, elliptical or oblong, entire or trifid in outline, usually retuse at the apex and with two or three appendages which arise from the upper side near the midrib (rather like the pages of a book).

Flowers five-tepalled, solitary, pale yellow to creamy-green, l-2cm across, late spring to summer. Falklands, Fuegia and southern Andes in snowmelt seeps, bogs, wet moorland etc from sea level to 2000m. [Pl.80]
