Botanical Description

Stems prostrate, to 40cm long from a large central tuft of erect leaves. Leaves long-stalked, broadly ovate to lanceolate to 8cm long, pinnate or pinnatisect, the lobes pointed or sharp-tipped and toothed, covered in glistening whitish spiny hairs. Flowers on 5cm pedicels, outward-facing, creamy-white with petals up to 5.5cm long forming an elegant closed lampshade. Chile and Argentina to Bolivia and Peru in screes and semi-shaded rocks in the central cordilleras at 2000m or more. The largest flowered species and not difficult to grow. [Pl.68]
