Plant 5-25cm tall, the sterile blade 3-10cm long, simply pinnate. Pinnules seven to nineteen, fan-shaped to trapezoid or crescent-shaped. Fertile frond longer than the sterile, branched. Almost cosmopolitan in temperate climates, usually in dryish grassland.
