Erect shrub to 3m, sometimes more, the young shoots downy or felted, not warty. Leaves roundish, oval or obovate, 1.2-3.5cm long, pointed or bluntish at the apex, coarsely toothed, more or less downy on both sides, often thickly so, pale or greyish beneath. Petiole 3mm long or less. North America in boggy places from Labrador to Ohio. Only likely to be confused in gardens with B. humilis and B. fruticosa, both of which have glandular warty branches. Not a particularly attractive species.
