Dwarf shrub 0.5-1.5m high. Branches erect, clothed for the first two years in minute down. Leaves round or sometimes wider than long, never pointed, 6-12mm long, round-toothed, glossy dark green above, prettily net-veined beneath. North America and Europe (including northern Britain) in damp places. It grows easily in quite dry places in the garden but looks best alongside a boulder by a stream. Two cultivars are sometimes available: 'Glengarry' from the place of that name in Scotland and 'Walter Ingwersen' from Narvik in Norway. Both are dwarfer than normal with the Norwegian being the more compact.
