Botanical Description

Young shoots hairy and glandular-warty. Leaves ovate, oval or obovate, 1.2-3.5cm long, mostly tapered (sometimes rounded) at the base, pointed, irregularly and rather coarsely toothed (teeth triangular but often bluntish), green and glabrous on both surfaces. Wide distribudon in Europe and Asia. Very closely related to B. fruticosa which has more tapered leaves towards the apex and finer, sharper and more regular toothing. Because of its great natural range, B. humilis is a variable species. For the rock garden, collections from high latitudes and altitudes are likely to be the most suitable.
