Similar to the somewhat better known B. plantaginea, but smaller in all its parts and with almost woolly, elliptic to ovate leaves about 5cm long. Flowering stems to 15cm high. Flowers in a dense bracted spike, purple, 6mm long, the lower lip bent down with the middle lobe shortest, summer. Wyoming to Utah, south to New Mexico at high altitudes often to 4000m, in tundralike habitats. [Pl.64]
