Botanical Description

Height 30-45cm spread to 1m or more. Mature twigs warm brown, with spines 1-1.5cm long. Leaves semi-deciduous, linear with rolled-under margins, l-2cm long, somewhat glaucous. Flowers singly or in small umbels, almost orange-yellow, to 5mm wide, late spring. Fruits globose, blue-black. Argentina and Chile, in the Andes up to subalpine or alpine levels among rocks and stable screes. A handsome and neglected species but needs plenty of room. Best in a scree; in good soil it can eventually exceed 1m in height and 2m in spread.
