Rhizomatous glabrous perennial 4-10cm tall, with many procumbent to ascending branched stems. Leaves linear to narrowly oblanceolate, 5-20 by l-3mm, sessile and entire. Flowerheads solitary, terminal, 6-12mm in diameter, campanulate, on slender 5-20mm long peduncles. The male florets, showier than in many species, form small balls of white or purplish overlapping stars, summer in the wild. Chile and Argentina, throughout Andean Patagonia and Fuegia, in stony and rocky terrain by running water, volcanic cinder wastes, screes and moraines, often associated with melting snow, from sea level to 2000m.
