Clump to small colony-forming, the slender 40-60cm in height. Basal leaves deeply cleft into three elliptic-ovate, irregularly toothed lobes, the central one a little shorter than the others. Flowerheads solitary or in twos or threes, 3.5-6cm across, pink-dushed, the bracteoles exceeding the flowers, summer. Caucasus, in meadows and woodland at 1300-2400m. A.m. subsp. haradjanii has the basal leaves three to five lobed and each stem carries three to five green and white flowerheads. Turkey, in coniferous forest and amongst scrub at 700-1750m.
