Botanical Description

Tufted and stemless from a thick rootstock covered by the remains of leafstalk bases. Leaves 5-13cm long, formed of three to thirteen ovate-elliptic leaflets. Flowers rose-purple, to 2.7cm long, from a cylindrical calyx about 1cm long, three to eight in short racemes, late spring to summer. Oregon to Idaho, California, Arizona and New Mexico, in dry stony habitats in pine-juniper woodland and sagebrush scrub above 1200m.
