ex DC. Clump or colony-forming, 30-90cm tall. Lower leaves oblanceolate to obovate, to 15cm long, often faded at flowering time. Stem leaves smaller, stalkless or clasping. Flowerheads several in cyme-like panicles, 4-5cm in diameter, rays rose-purple to violet or blue. Alaska to California with several varieties. Unsuited to the rock garden except A.f var. apricus. This is tufted, with decumbent stems to 25cm long bearing one to a few flowerheads; California, in subalpine and alpine ridges and meadows.
