Large tuft to small clump-forming, to 30cm or more in height. Leaves up to 15cm long, oblanceolate, 5-15mm wide, mostly basal, a few very small ones on the stems. Flowerheads solitary, up to 4cm in diameter, purple or lavender. A.a. var. andersonii is more robust, with basal leaves to 25cm long by 1.5cm in width and flowering stems to 40cm tall. A. alpigenus central Oregon to Washington State, A.a. var. andersonii California to central Oregon, in montane coniferous forests and alpine fellfields.
