Leaves to 25cm or more long with a black stalk and midrib, and pinnae ovate, oblong or lanceolate, 2-6cm long, with an ear-like lobe at the base of the upper edge. Spore-bearing leaves erect, deep green and semi-evergreen, sterile leaves shorter, spreading, paler and fully evergreen. Eastern North America, in open woods, rocky banks and crevices in shade and sun. A variable species in the wild with several varieties. Hardy and not difficult to grow.
