Botanical Description

bluntly heart-shaped, shiny and rather hairy leaves 8-15cm long are borne on stalks 15-20cm long. Flowers usually deep purple, about 10cm across the long acuminate lobes - in bud, the terminal half of each lobe is neatly folded in on itself. The base of each lobe tends to cohere to form an apparent tube, hairy on the outside, early spring. Western North America from British Columbia to northern California. Hardy.
