the basal leaves long-stalked, heart-shaped, boldly toothed, 5-12cm long, more or less white-hairy. Flowerheads one to three, yellow, about 6cm in diameter on stems 30-60cm tall. A.c. var. pumila (syn. A. humilis), has stems to 20cm in height, smaller leaves and solitary flowerheads. New Mexico and California to Alaska, in mountain woods and open places.
