the basal stem leaves usually narrowly oblanceolate to elliptic, 5-15cm long, downy, sometimes with glandular hairs. Flowerheads 3.5-5.5cm in diameter, yellow, usually solitary, sometimes two or three, on stems 15-40cm in height. A.a. subsp. alpina, syn. A. montana var. alpina, has only one or two pairs of leaves on stems to 25cm A.a. subsp. iljinii bears three pairs of leaves on stems up to 45cm tall. Arctic Europe to Greenland and arctic North America, in meadows.
