More or less loosely mat-forming, 10-15cm across, from a woody rootstock. Leaves 4-8cm long, rigid, awl-shaped, blunt-tipped and shortly ciliate. Flowers white, 1-1.5cm across, mainly solitary or in pairs, summer. California to Alaska and the Rockies, in rocky alpine fellfields.
