Jones var. glabrescens. Tufted from a branched woody rootstock, with slender stems 10-20cm tall. Leaves mainly basal, needle-like, l-2cm in length. Flowers white, 5mm or more across, few to several in open cymes, summer. Oregon, California and Nevada, on dry rocky slopes to subalpine levels, sometimes in conifer forest. A.k. subsp. compacta is more congested, the leaves 3-6mm and stems 2-6cm long. California only at alpine levels.
