Botanical Description

Closely related to the taller A. andersonii but rarely more than 1m high in Britain. Leaves broadly ovate, heart-shaped at the base, up to 5cm long by 3cm broad, grey in colour due to the flne pubescence over both surfaces. Flowers pink and white, 5-6mm long, held in short panicles, early spring. Fruits reddish-brown. California, on dry slopes. Mature trunks and branches are mahogany-red and smoothly polished. Requires a sunny position to ripen wood.
