Botanical Description

Height 20-80cm. Basal leaves biternate, leaflets three-lobed, l-3cm long. Flowers 4-8cm wide, 4.5-7cm long, the sepals deep to light blue, petals white, spurs long and straight, 4-5cm Rocky Mountains from Montana to New Mexico in moist conditions in aspen groves or other light woodland. This is one of the most beautiful of the long-spurred aquilegias and a parent of many of the strains of long spurred hybrids available, including the Scott-Elliott strain. A spurless mutant of this strain has recently become popular under the name A. clematiflora. These vary considerably, but are usually between 20 and 40cm high with spurless, deep reddish-purple flowers. Comes reasonably true from seed.
