This large, loosely mat-forming species is quite unlike the others described here. Leaves elliptic to broadly obovate, to 6.5cm long, boldly three to seven veined, hairy above when young, later almost smooth. Capitula three to thirty, to 5-7mm long, in corymbs on stems to 30cm or more tall, bracts often purple flushed and florets red. A.p. var. ambigens see A. fallax. Eastern North America, in open woods, fields and rocky slopes.
