This species lacks stolons, forming small matted tufts. Leaves narrowly oblanceolate, 1.5-3cm long. Capitula solitary tipped brown or bluish, on stems 2-4cm or more in height. Western U.S.A., north to British Columbia, in the mountains on dry slopes and ridges, amongst scrub and open pine forest up to 2950m.
