Botanical Description

Almost certainly annual. Always solitary flowered. Flowering stems leafy, the foliage deep green, often reddish at the tips, linear-triangular with the bases clasping the stem. Flowers solitary, yellow and pink, wide-spreading with three outer very broadly obovate, mucronate tepals 1.5cm long and three narrower inner tepals, the middle one shorter and more or less triangular. Although almost entirely golden-yellow, the narrowly oblanceolate upper-inner tepal pair are green tipped and have a sparse dusting of red freckles. The rest of the flower is plain creamy pink. Widespread along coastal oases of the Chilean Atacama, in scree and talus at fairly low altitudes.
