8cm or more in height. Frequently dwarf in the wild, especially subsp. velutina. Leaves twisted and glaucous, usually long-linear, almost grassy and always pointed, can also be shortly triangular. Flowers in umbels of twenty or more broadly funnel-shaped basically pastel pink, having spathulate outer tepals 3-4cm in length with notably thickened apical points of green or brownish green, and oblanceolate inners, the lowest shorter, the upper pair narrower with a light yellow cross-band stippled dark wine-red. Chile in the central valley around Santiago and coastal range above Valparaiso at about 2000m. Subsp. velutina may be recognised by its velvety pubescence on the leaves and central nerves of the tepals, also by its narrower corollas of 3-3.5cm and paler markings. Andes of southern Coquimbo province at 800-1800m.
