Botanical Description

Stems 15-30cm, simple or branched. Leaves narrow, erect, pleated. Flowers short-lived, erect, a few produced in succession from each set of spathes; the three large outer segments are purple and the three smaller inner ones convoluted and marked with yellow and white areas; all six segments form a shallowly-cupped, brown and purple-blotched centre; early summer in cultivation, often with a second flush in early autumn. Louisiana and Texas, in prairies and open pine woodland. [Pl.6]
