A loosely tufted perennial, 20-45cm in height, with slender rhizomes. Leaves to 12cm or more long, hairless. Flower heads ovoid, l-3cm long, silky-hairy, grey-green or purple tinted, mid to late summer. Circum-Arctic in moist rocky or grassy terrain. A.a. subsp. glaucus has blue-green leaves and broadly cylindrical flowerheads; native only to the southern Urals. It is the only form available worth cultivating.
