Stems erect, 20-40cm tall. Leaves linear to lanceolate, 4-10cm long, slender-pointed and toothed. Flowers bell-shaped, pale blue, 2-2.5cm long, with toothed, linear calyx lobes, in loose racemes. A.n. var. stenophylla, syn. A. nipponica, has lanceolate, untoothed calyx lobes. A.n. var. petrophila is somewhat taller with falcatelanceolate leaves. All from Japan.
